Easy organic controls of Red lily beetle! #lily #lilies #red #bug #pestcontrol #pest #success #easy
The dreaded red lily beetles are back - again!
Surely these are the most despicable parents ever - they wrap their young grubs in their own poo - as we see in this video
First we find a happy couple of red beetles , which I reluctantly put to an quick end using my foot. We then try a new (to me) form of red lily beetle control (#Grazers) which is sprayed over the leaves, to help protect the plant from the beetle attacks .. it is NOT a poison! so is supposed safe to use around animals and kids, but strengthens the plant against damage from the red pest.
This style of treatment requires a different mindset from 'old fashioned gardeners' like me who have been used to spraying a chemical and expecting it to instantly stop any more pests for a few weeks or more .. this organic control requires patience and persistence as we 'work with nature' rather than 'obliterate nature'!
This is my first time using this product .. so time will tell .. watch this space!

How we grow Heuchera plants in shade under a conifer #garden #plants #Heuchera #shade #easy #bees

Look at our HGeuchera grow! Despite being in shade and quite dry soil underneath a lovely conifer the Heuchera has spread to form a bronze carpet all year around. It is hardy here in South Wales (UK) and has 'laughed at' temperatures as lower as -8C one winter, it may drop a few leaves in such cold spells but there will plenty of new leaves in spring, and flowers (much loved by the bees). I have tried everything organic over the last 15 years, neem oil, garlic spray, tumeric spray etc with no great effect. I have given up this year and used 'ultimate bug clear'this year.Probably only sprayed each plant 4 times. The lilies are ready to flower and clear of damage. It definitely works better than anything else Ive tried and saves me picking off the beetles by hand every morning.

Enjoy those flowers 😊👍

Great video Roger. My lily plants have been decimated by these little critters but I never see them on there! I have tried bug sprays but to no avail. My neighbour said that when you pick them off alive and hold them in your hand they scream so that completely freaked me out about removing them if I do see them. I’ll keep watching to see if this product works. Thanks.

Hi Thanks very much for your question, which UA-cam translated for me and I hope you will be able to translate my answer too ...? In my experience, once the stem has gone soft it is not going to grow again, but if the stem is hard and firm lower down then I would try cutting the stem where it is still form and there is a chance it will send out new shoots .. you may have to wait a long time (maybe 6 months) to see the new shoots starting to grow. Be careful to not get the compost too wet, especially if you do not have many leaves left on the plant after you have cut it back as that can cause the stem to rot. Here is another of my videos showing how I cut back a Yucca stem and you can also see a stem that was cut back a year before and is starting to grow new shoots - hope this helps / makes sense? ua-cam.com/video/iFovsQrcdbY/v-deo.html

Hi Are you in the UK West Midlands? Can you give a town name? To be honest I think you will need to plant for some plant protection for any cold snaps or even prolonged wet weather, we lost all ours last winter here in south wales. (although I expect we will get more new seedlings popping up this year from dormant seeds. Very very well drained compost / soil will help and in a warm sunny south / west facing situation. Then make a plan to protect the plants with a temporary 'tent' using fleece or Polythene .. but only use the tent when we have below freezing temps ... does that make sense? Thanks Roger

Hertfordshire, Uk - Cordyline Australia I've noticed with removing the leaves off a cordyline is that i only remove the dead and yellowing leaves... but i look at how they are arranged around the trunk and i remove them in their natural order eg the outer ones first (based on their outer and inner layout order around the tree stem) but essentially if they dont come off straight away, i pull that leaf a bit to give it notice that i want to remove it, then leave it for a minute or so and go back to it and somehow the plant then relaxes and releases that leaf without me requiring much, if any effort. Quite bizzare (almost operates like a washing machine door after the cycles finished eg door locked for a minute then releases the catch). I only cut a leaf if i have to.

I've only had mine for about 4 to 5 years in a tall pot outside (of which the pot is half filled with polystyrene to reduce its weight) and soil is lacking on the top as its probably fallen down inside the pot plus there's been all this rain. So against the odds and it's environment, I was amazed to see this growth appear about a week ago.. its already blooming with this growth showing above the plant with some very small white flowers. Its end of May 2024, Hertfordshire, UK!

I tend to cut off the old leaves rather than pulling them off. As the trees get taller I tend to tidy them up once every few years if I can see a lot of old leaves - I did a video last year showing how I did it on a more mature tree here’s the link in case it’s of use ua-cam.com/video/X8cTuYFInaQ/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

Hi, thanks for your excellent question! Opinions and experiences vary according to where you live ... here in south Wales the summers tend to be quite wet / rainy which the dormant bulbs do not like, so tend to lift some of mine ... however I do have some areas of my garden which are very well drained and so the soil doesn't get too wet and the bulbs have come back each year for up to 10 years! In summary if you have dry summers and / or well drained soil it may be worth leaving the bulbs in and see how they do .. if they do not come back well the next year it may be best to lift them when the leaves turn yellow - does this help?

Hi Sarah - thanks for your question, my instinct would be that hardwood cutting overwinter would be the easiest option, but will happily try some 'semi-ripe' cuttings in a few weeks time and will do a video about it too .. will let you know when I upload the video. OK?

WOW..that really is impressive. I wonder how they keep the moss moist and safe from sunshine.

You can see why it was the children's choice. Could definitely see myself sitting there taking in the beauty. Great to see the garden planted with flowers that can be easily purchased or sown as seeds. Blooming Lovely❤

Hi thanks for your comment, for the first few years I pruned ours back quite severely in early spring in the same way I prune bush roses. This encouraged lots of fresh leafy shots from the base of the plant. Some fertiliser applied at the same time helped too. I uploaded a video showing how to do this previously, I’ll put a link to that video in a separate reply - hope that helps? Can I ask-where are you living?

Here is the pruning video, it features a rose first but the Sambucus prune starts around 3 minutes into the video. I did this prune in March. ua-cam.com/video/1svDK2idGwE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

@helenphancanada8988 Hi Helen, thanks for subscribing and welcome to our little 'club' .. would I be correct in thinking that you live in Canada? .. if so which part - we have family out there, and we visited mississauga / Toronto in 1029 and loved it .. hope to go back someday and explore further. Re your Rhodohypoxis ... your climate may be different to ours .. during hot spells in summer / flowering time they may need watering a couple of times per week .. but it also depends on how big the pot is ... i.e. a small plant in a large pot may need less watering than a larger plant in a smaller pot .. I suppose a good rule could be do not let them dry out in summer but do allow them good drainage / as dry as possible over winter - we have wet / wild / and usually mild winters here in Wales so there is a danger that they can get too wet over winter .. if you get hard frost in Canada you may need to give them a little more protection from the cold .. hope this all makes sense?
